There is no doubt that the business card is ubiquitous. I like to think of your business card as the handshake you leave behind. So, what are you leaving behind? Is your business card a firm handshake with a direct, friendly look in the eyes? Or is, it a limp, moist grasp with shifty eyes?

Ah, now you see, right? In this age of 500/1000 design-’em-yourself business cards for $19.95, a lot of you are leaving behind the impression of a weak handshake—even if your in-person encounter was impressive, it can be forgotten when looking at your card in a file or wallet with 10-20 other cards.

So, how do you make your card stand out? Ok, I hear you, how do you make your business card stand out affordably?

The most affordable (though by far not the only) way, in my opinion, is to make your card functional for the recipient. (This will require you to spend only 7-12 dollars more to have your card printed double-sided in most cases). For example, if you have a cooking-related business, put a simple recipe on the back. If you do surveying, put basic area conversions on the back. Photographer? Put instructions on how to make a pin-hole camera. Use whatever you think might be fun for the recipient, and what will keep your card in the forefront—frequently getting used and shared with others.
